7/2/2023 0 Comments Boxee tv dvr reviewBoxee TV will ship with two TV tuners and utilize an interface that's years ahead of anything Comcast, Time Warner, DirecTV or Dish has to offer. The revamped set-top box will merge over-the-air broadcasts, online content and DVR functionality into a single unit. 2010's model was centered on being an app-based media streamer, an idea that Boxee CEO Avner Ronen since realized was a failed concept. The firm learned a lot from their first outing about what works and more importantly, what doesn't work. It can't hurt to try if you're lucky enough to live in one of the aforementioned cities, however.īoxee is planning a huge reboot with the upcoming Boxee TV set-top box. It's unclear if new sign-ups will qualify or if the offer is only being extended to those that requested additional information early on. This includes Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Those who opted to receive additional information via an early sign-up page are now reportedly receiving emails with an offer to earn a free Boxee TV simply by completing a survey.īased on the survey, The Verge has ascertained that the promotion is limited to markets that will support the cloud-based DVR service at launch. It's just another function that integrates into the Boxee Box as a standalone app, and one that doesn't interact with the various apps and services on the box.Boxee is betting the house on their upcoming reboot and if you happen to live in one of several select test markets, you can get in on the action free of charge. Besides simple program information and finding out what other Boxee users are watching, it doesn't offer any real features besides the TV tuner itself. If you want to get rid of cable or satellite and access local channels, the Boxee Live TV on a Boxee Box offers a slightly better experience than using a standard digital tuner. It can't even pause live TV for a short time. The Live TV function also lacks a DVR, despite the Boxee box's ability to access SD cards and USB drives. The only social concessions are the internal Boxee user features that let you see how many other Boxee users are watching different channels, and share your favorites with friends on Boxee. This limits users' ability to experience connected TV, since they can't actively interact with social networks or browse the Web with the TV signal running. To get into any other Boxee function, you need to exit the TV mode. The tuner function works for watching TV, but if you want to do anything else while watching, you're going to be disappointed. The channel guide accurately showed what was on, and switching between channels was a simple matter of using the navigation pad, but the lack of a grid view meant planning what to watch later (or better yet, setting reminders to watch shows later) was very difficult. I easily tuned into the high definition channels of the local NBC and ABC affiliates, which looked as good as the Dish Network cable feed. It's very quick to switch between channels, and high definition stations come through clearly, even with the short, telescoping antenna that comes with the Boxee TV Live and the reception morass that is the labs. If there are too many channels to easily navigate, or if you just want to have a few available, you can block channels from your list. You can look at future time slots by pressing right on the Boxee Box remote, but there is no grid view to look at an entire day's worth of programming. After scanning the signal for available channels the Boxee Box will be completely ready to let you watch TV.įeatures The channel guide only shows one time slot at a time, meaning you must scroll down a list of available channels and see what show is currently on. When you access it the first time, you can enter your zip code and choose whether you want over-the-air channels or ClearQAM basic cable channels. Once it's plugged in, the Boxee Box will show a Live TV option in the menu. The extension cable is preferable, because it gives the tuner slightly longer reach with an antenna, and it keeps the other USB port from being hard to access with the device's thick body. To install the Live TV, just plug it into one of the USB ports on the back of the Boxee Box, either directly or with the included extension cable.
